South San Francisco, CA  July 9, 2017

UPDATE AUGUST 29 2018: Thanks to our neighbor Roderick Bovee for taking raw data gleaned from Everything South City, along with other insights, to create a google doc that shows the area, time, day, location and notes of coyote sightings. ###

South San Francisco is home to a large population of coyotes who take up residence in areas that offer open space and easy access to food and water. They have long called Sign Hill, Golf Course, cemeteries and San Bruno Mountain home and we continue to receive some great photos of these wild creatures as neighbors come across them.

Everything South City has published quite bit about these magnificent animals will the hope our neighbors learn the importance of keeping these wild animals – wild. HERE is a link to our past articles so please do read up on what we can do to help keep a good balance in our natural life around us.

We will continue to add photos from neighbors on this article so please come back from time to time to see the latest updates. And remember: coyotes are looking for food and by keeping your small animals, pet food, trash, etc safely put away we can co-exist – especially for those who live closer to open spaces.

UPDATES: December 15, 2017:
#1 A neighbor messages ESC: Hi everything south city! My husband was walking our dog at 9am today and saw a coyote in Selick Park near the tennis courts. It ran down towards the hill after they spotted it. Luckily they’re okay but we wanted to report this to neighbors who walk their dogs at the park to be aware of their surroundings. Thanks!

#2 At 3:45 a neighbor messaged: Baby coyote sighting in chestnut /grand av

#3 Keith Leveroni: Fyi….on Tues night around 10pm we saw a coyote run down sequoia ave past my street Edgewood Way in Sunshine Gardens. Kinda spooked us because I walk my 2 small dogs every night up Sequoia. But what was even scarier was waking up to go to work at 545am I noticed a big hole in the middle of my front lawn. I have gophers but obviously gophers push the dirt up not making a big hole. Anyway it was dark so I left thinking that was weird. When I got home I found a half eaten gopher with no head next to the big hole. Smh it’s getting kinda crazy people

UPDATE: December 24, 2017 11:30am:

Just spotted this coyote right by Salvation Army on mission road.
A cop was following it but might want to let neighbors know in the area to keep pets inside!

These photos are from the Pecks Lot neighborhood off of Sister Cities Blvd and Airport Blvd. “There’s a coyote roaming the neighborhood. I’ve seen it a couple times and it’s not afraid of humans. A coyote took my neighbor’s dog out of its yard and took it two blocks down the street. Attached you can see that the dog was seriously injured. Please help warn others!”

May 26, 2018 This morning I noticed my dog was trying to climb the back fence to get on the hillside that climbs up to hwy 280. I opened the door to yell at her and saw what she was after. A medium sized coyote! It wasn’t aggressive at all but if you have cats or small dogs, or in our case 2 year old twins, you should keep a watchful eye out. Alone a coyote isn’t too much trouble, but get a small pack and they become much more daring toward humans.
I love that we’ve got wildlife here in our back yard, just be careful everyone!

UPDATE: Thur Aug 16, 2018 SSF resident Leila Endo shares “One of many coyotes that frequent the Sign Hill/Stonegate area. This coyote is one of several that have recently been spotted making backyard visits and pass-throughs. The coyotes in the area seem to have become less elusive lately, with more frequent sightings out in broad daylight. – Monday, 8/13/2018 @ ~10 a.m. – co-existing with wildlife

There are others that visit, too. The one posted in the photo collage is bigger than the one pictured here, taken last month in July.
This smaller one (pictured above) might be a recent offspring of the bigger one. I occasionally see them foraging together, and often hear what sounds like a family of them barking, yelping, and howling during the night.

UPDATE: Mon July 24 2018 A SSF neighbor shares ‘Hey just hearing some coyote howling in the westbourough area around 11:30pm. At least I think it’s coyote. Didn’t think they would be so close.’

UPDATE: Monday August 21 2018  Coyotes were loud off of Sign Hill all last night and today.

UPDATE NOVEMBER 8, 2018

Our neighbor PAT from KENT Way shared this via email today:

This morning at 7:15 am, there was a large coyote in the common green of Kent Way and Greendale. It almost got a cat and a dog. Fortunately I could see the cat on my fence was alarmed and I went out to the fence and saw the coyote standing on the lawn. I clapped and yelled and scared the coyote away. I immediately saw a girl open her back gate and let her little dog out. I had to yell at her to get the dog and go back inside. The coyote had JUST passed her yard. My son ran up the common green to scare the coyote away, but it already disappeared. The coyote went on to other adjoining common greens.

Will be putting flyers out on nearby poles.

Coyote on Miller Ave

Tonight around 630pm I was walking my 2 dogs on Miller Ave, right by Sunshine Gardens Elementary, and a coyote came sprinting right at me from Holly Ave. I was spooked. Still daylight. I started waving my arms like a maniac and it turned down Sequioa. Then 2 mins later here it comes again flying up Sequioa right at me. I swear to God, I was digging in for a confrontation. But again it looked at us but kept sprinting down Miller towards ECHS. Be careful folks. Keep your cats indoors..

When I was young growing up in Winston Manor. We used to roam the surrounding hillside. This was the 50’s & 60’s. Never did I see a coyote. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were up in Sign Hill.
Love the pictures on the coyotes in the South City neighborhoods, especially Parkside Middle School. It brought back some good memories.
