Program to offer free lunches to all children in South San Francisco up to 18 years old
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., (May 6, 2014) – The South San Francisco Unified School District has announced it will sponsor the USDA 2014 Summer Feed program at two of its neighborhood serving schools this summer. The program will be housed at Los Cerritos Elementary School and Martin Elementary School, both in South San Francisco, and will offer children up to the age of 18 free lunches this summer beginning June 2, 2014.
The program builds upon the many steps the District’s Nutrition Services Department has taken in recent years to improve childhood nutrition as a prerequisite for improving student academic performance. Countless studies have proven linkages between student nutrition and their performance in the classroom, showing improved nutrition and healthier meals can improve behavior, attention span and cognition.
“Every child in our community deserves at least one healthy, prepared meal to fuel growth in both their mind and body,” said South San Francisco Unified School District Superintendent Alejandro Hogan. “With many of our students living in homes where both parents work, the District has an obligation to ensure that students are fed balanced, nutritious meals that support their continued growth, but that obligation should not end at the end of the school year. Our summer lunch program ensures that families that need this critical service continue to have access for their students over the long, hot summer months so that the progress we have made in boosting student nutrition does not begin to deteriorate along with our students’ health.”
The summer lunch program will operate Monday through Friday form 11:45 am to 1pm. Participants do not need to be students in the South San Francisco Unified School District, but they must be under the age of 18.
