53 Citations Given to Distracted Drivers

In conjunction with the nationwide “Distracted Driving” enforcement month of April, a special team of Police Officers from South San Francisco Police Department fanned out across the city on Friday April 25th to enforce the distracted driving laws. Despite raining throughout the day, officers handed out 53 citations for distracted driving, including using a cellular telephone not in hands-free mode, texting while driving, and running a red light.

These citations issued on Friday are in addition to the hundreds of citations already issued this month alone for distracted driving in South San Francisco.  Drivers are reminded that it is never okay to hold and use a cellular telephone while driving to talk, text, read messages, or read other data.  This is a dangerous practice that results in many traffic collisions causing injuries and deaths.  Even though April is the only nationwide distracted driving month, officers are constantly on the prowl all year long looking for distracted drivers.  It’s not worth it!  Put the phone down and don’t risk injuring yourself or others.

This operation was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
