La Tapatia burritos were voted #7 in the whole USA by Daily Meal. Lalo & Graciela would be proud

Well most of South City already knew we were home to some of the best Mexican food around and it’s great to see The DAILY MEAL agree with us. They recently did a scientific study of hundreds of burritos across America and came up with a final list of 35. We are very proud to have received a #7 ranking for one of our best local Mexican shops, La Tapatia.

The criteria used to determine who had the best included the following:

Are all the ingredients fresh?

Is there a good selection of meats and add-ons?

Can you customize your order, right down to the amount of crema squeezed on top?

Is it renowned by critics and locals alike in its city?

Nate Silver, the writer and statistician of this study added this, ‘The We’re not ranking places to buy a burrito; we’re ranking the burritos themselves, but we know that you don’t buy a burrito in a void. So when you drive by this place does your mouth immediately start to water, forcing you to impulsively pull over and, before you know it, you’re diving face-first into the burrito of your dreams? Yeah, those are the burritos we’re looking for’

In May 2013, Everything South City friend Jordy Grgich brought the burrito subject up for a vote when he posted  “Very important debate we must get to the bottom of: who has the best burrito in South City?”  And that brought in over 140 people to weigh in on what they thought was our best burrito maker. It was close and La Tapatia was at the top along with La Morena.  To see that conversation click HERE.

The DAILY MEAL review had this to say at our local fav as it was named #7 out of 35 finalists in America;

Opened in 1976, La Tapatia was one of the first Mexican groceries to open in South San Francisco’s downtown, and it’s still going strong today, turning out some of the city’s finest burritos. It’s an unassuming market up front but a full-service taqueria in the back; everything is fresh, tortillas are made in-house, and the meats are grilled to order. Go for the al pastor and thank us later.

La Tapatia was the dream of  Eduardo ‘Lalo’ Haro and his family, and Humberto Campos. Sadly we lost Lalo in March 2013 after battling leukemia. His wife, Graciela, proceed Lalo in death by a few years. Their daughter Barbara has worked tirelessly to keep the her family legacy alive.

So go check it out for yourself. La Tapatia is located at 411 Grand Ave, across from City Hall. Phone # 589.5881 and their hours are Monday thru Saturday 7am-7pm and on Sunday 7am-6pm.

Everything South City would like to thank community member and ESC friend Jaime González for sharing the DAILY MEAL info with us.
