When will Safeway step up and renovate at least one of their three stores in our city has continued to spark heated replies as we can see with the dialogue started by South San Francisco resident Andrea Villa. While there is much speculation it appears the shopping center that currently houses the Safeway at 180 El Camino Real at Spruce may well be seeing major changes …. in time.
This 14+ acre sight is currently moving through the city process and will be coming before the Planning Commission in the next few months. While Safeway would be encouraged to return as an anchor store, we will not know anything specific for a while. The area is slated for 285 residential living units as well as 222,000 sf of retail. Again, as this project is still in the beginning stages with design review, there are no set dates for the beginning or ending of construction. Or who the new tenants will be. Everything South City will continue to bring you updates as they come along.
Villa writes: Wow…who has shopped at the new Safeway in Milbrae yet? It was so nice to shop in a brand new organized, well-stocked store with a deli, floral and bakery departments. The fish and meat departments we nice as well. Great idea to have the parking lot underneath the store….lots of spaces and outdoor music. I don’t understand why the Safeways in SSF are being let get so run down and not renovated. We deserve a new store to shop at too.
Cathy Damato Sapp New Safeway in SSF is way overdue!
Jeanine Acosta I call the Safeway on Chestnut the Ghetto! I know not nice but seriously look at it.
Janel M Chrestenson Pearson Yup, we do need two new Safeways or one huge one!
Danyah Baliu A safeway employee told me that the one next to ballys is the next to be remodeled …. Let’s hope this is true.
JoAnn Willis I waas in Chestnut yesterday. OMG what a poor excuse of a store. Somehow SSF is getting the boot on shopping. Where are our new stores?
Brandi Magner The manager of the SSF Safeway told me they will close for a complete reconstruction in January
Mark Thaler Brandi which one the one on Chestnut or El Camino?
Mark Thaler I hope Chestnut gets a re-do. My mom has shopped there so many years it would be nice if they redid that one.
Sal Lopez I heard our Safeways are next in line ….but we been shopping at the Burlingame location because our safeways and packnsave been having poor veggie selection and just been falling off .so now we go to millbrae for our shopping came out nice
Lynn Wright I was just at the Millbrae Safeway. Very nice.
Adam Hyndman I was told a long time ago that the pak and save was going to be converted to a super safeway.
Monica Burke It is the El Camino Safeway that is going to be redone… I hope they keep chestnut open I like the store and so many older people don’t like the giant stores because they can’t find anything.
Janel M Chrestenson Pearson I hope they plan to start soon!
Tommy Toaster Petrini We have a greater population too! Lets write a strongly worded letter!
Alicia Halliday I was told by a Safeway employee that remodeling of the one by Bally’s will be done and that chestnut will mostly likely close down permanently. That’s what I heard anyhow.
Christina Barnett Haas My friend Lucinda Denning works at CVS & heard its NOT going to remodel after all idk bout the one on chestnut tho..
Brandi Magner The one on El Camino. Was scheduled for October but they pushed it to Jan 2014
Lucinda Denning i heard not til 2015 since i work at cvs by ballys because i heard from someone from safeway that they are gonna remodle the fairmont first
Jessica Dominguez Both of our safeways are due for remodeling til then I shop at lunardis. Much fresher produce and great meat and deli dept worth the extra money.
Raul Duenas Both of the south city safeways are the ugly one in all the area!!! As sooner you walk in you feel like in 1982!!!
Janice Hsu Stone Definitely a new Safeway is needed. One thing we don’t need is a third Pacific Super at Westborough. That will be three Pacific Supers. The new Westborough center has one going in. I personally find them dirty and unpleasant and I am not happy to see a third one going in.
Mary Vance Chestnut is pretty decent compared to the Safeway on El Camino. It’s small but I like that better than trudging through a huge store. This is why I don’t go to pack N Save. I get most of my produce at Trader Joe’s so it works for me!
Martha N Butch Santinelli god i^m so lost up here.
Karen Johanson Heard from a CVS employee that the remodeling of the whole CVS/Safeway El Camino plaza was due to start in October. . .can’t be soon enough!
Lucinda Denning no, i work at cvs on el camino and its not happening i have even talked with people at the safeway too
Karen Johanson Thanks, Lucinda. . .I guess we’ll just keep waiting.
Candice Lofton It is too packed. Im staying at my SSF
Riyadh Katout Answer: Because its South City!
Muriel Pleasic Peninger Santa Rosa has a nice safeway and the people are just wonderful
Frances Ortiz It’s comming
Adam Hyndman Riyadh Katout…whatever Hillsborough
Ray Bartolo The reason we SSF residents have never had a decent shopping plaza Is because of our City Council and redevelopment agency. They’re more concerned with getting dollar stores instead of decent retail establishments here in this city. I will believe it when I see it if and when we ever get a new Safeway.
Ellen Minucciani I understand how you feel. Once QFI/Best Market closed, I would go to Petrini’s in San Bruno just to have a decent store. They are more expensive than Safeway but have more choices and definitely a better meat/fish department.
Nichole Cazares I passed by but didn’t go in. I felt like I wasn’t dressed for the occasion. That Safeway puts our poor Safeways to shame.
Jon Henz SSF IS IN INBARESSMENT LINDEN IS NOT SAFE GRAND IS LIKE THE COLOR OF NEW STREET LIGHTS MORG BLACK FILLDE WITH DRUNKS DRUGIES CHINESE MAKE U TURNS ALL DAY 2 OFFICERS WALKING UP ADD DOWN GRAND WHY ONE CANT WAKK ON THE OTHER SIDE OF STEERT ONE WALK UP GRAND ONE WALK DOWN GRAND ALL RESTURANT ARE FILFY AND LINDEN SIDE NO SUPPER MARKET BUT THER EXCUSE IS THIS PART OF TOWN OLD SSF THAT THERE EXCUSE A VERRY SORRY ONE
Joey Preston We should be satisfied with our Safeway. If it got knocked down it would probably turn into an Asian shopping center like the ones in Westborough, just what we need.
Everything South City And with 285 residential units……
Michele Ferrario Burbano Millbrae Safeway is nice but the aisles are not very big so its not easy getting around when the aisles are busy with people and carts. When you come in the front door the escalator is on the wrong side, up is on the left and down is right side right in front of the door so there is a traffic jam. And Millbrae has some rude people I know I live there.
Debi HdzHorny Millbrae is the same as Burlingame’s new Safeway. South City’s Safeway on ECR across from See’s will be renovating in January.

I am black female my whole family been shopping at Safeway before i was born …i been in San Mateo County for 25yrs shopping at both Safeways in SSF since 1990 i think they both need an upgrade but i dont think i would go as far as to say they GHETTO
Bottom Line — if forces many of us to do our grocery shopping in other cities.
I agree, the Safeway at Chestnut is worn out and ghetto-ish. I haven’t shopped there in years and will not shop there any longer. Safeway is treating So. City residents like stepchildren as it builds the mega store in Millbrae. Our money isn’t as good as theirs?
