South City Needs Council Member Candidates

South San Francisco, CA July 5, 2013City Seal_thumb_thumb

As our city sets about this upcoming November election, folks interested in joining our City Council are being encouraged to step up and take out  election papers.

*Candidates can contact City Clerk (877-8518) Monday for paperwork which needs to be completed and returned no later than Aug 9.

*This is a very unique year in that we will have 4 of our 5 council seats on the ballot; 3 4yr terms & 1 2yr term.

*Not quite sure how to run a campaign? San Mateo County conducts Candidate Seminars which give in-depth information on running for elected office. The seminars are conducted at 40 Tower Road, San Mateo: July 10th 2pm, July 22nd 10am  and July 25th at 2pm (This is a Data Seminar to learn how to effectively use Voter Data)
*While the <$6K annually might not be that enticing, the seat does come with pension & medical.

*There are some major issues facing our city and we need strong leadership to help us navigate the changes, while keeping stability in our city. Who’s up for the challenge?

In addition, many of our department heads are retiring along with some very key employees. Phil White, our Fire Chief has retired, and our city is actively seeking a City Manager as Barry Nagel is set to retire as well.  Public Works will see Director Terry White prepare for his retirement and our Police Chief/Public Safety Officer Mike Massoni is said to have a few more years before he follows suit.  (Massoni is currently covering both the Police Department and the Fire Department as Public Safety Chief.)

There are some major developments slated for our city.  This is a time of forward movement with exciting things coming up and we look forward to a long list of well rounded candidates to step up.    Is that you?  Below are some of the responsibilities of this position:

  • Acting as the governing body of South San Francisco
  • Establishing local law and policies through the enactment of ordinances and resolutions
  • Determining how the City shall obtain and spend funds
  • Appointing members to advisory municipal activities (Boards, Commissions, Interim Councilmembers)
  • Representing the City by serving on regional and County committees and boards whose policies may affect South San Francisco

More information is available from the county at ‘Shape The Future‘ and/or by contacting our city clerk, Krista Martinelli 650/877-8518. Anyone in her department would be happy to help.

Although no formal paperwork has yet been turned in, the following have expressed interest and/or are campaigning for one of these seats:

Pradeep Gupta: *Interim Councilmember

Mark Nagales: Parks and Recreation Commissioner, Aide to Congresswoman Jackie Speier

Liza Normandy: School Board Trustee, Businesswoman
