Photo Panoramio

Everything South City heard a rumor that Westlake Joe’s was closing and called to confirm, and yep, the rumors are correct. Westlake Joe’s will be closing at the end of January 2014 and re-opening in 2015 under new ownership of Original Joe’s.  Westlake Joe’s has been a local haunt since the 1956 when it was opened by Bruno Scatena. It is one of the few local establishments that have remained family owned and operated for over half a century. It will be missed.

Original Joe’s has also been family owned and operated since they opened in San Francisco back in 1937 by Tony Rodin and was first a small 14 stool counter joint. Since that inception many other Original Joe’s have followed the ‘Joe’s Concept’ across the country. We are lucky, we still get the real deal! So while many are lamenting the closing we know that under the leadership of Rodin’s family and management, we will still have a wonderful local place to enjoy. It is the waiting for it to re-open that will be hard to bear!

Below are reactions shared by our neighbors when we broke the news on our facebook page earlier this morning.  John Palmer’s remark really hit home as we know this is a beloved hang out for us all. “What a bummer. My folks are regulars there. Where will I find them on Fridays now? Who’s tab will I be able to put dinner on.”

Linda Tikkanen NO no and no

Geoffrey Edward Gay BS! That place is an institution, and very cool the way it is.

Donna Jennings Sorry spelled especially wrong above but some of the comments about the servers pissed me off. Anyone out there who knows me, I’m not shy!

My dad who passed away 6 years ago loved it here. He would always get his usual fried prawns and spaghetti with extra sauce. I liked the place I won’t say lived because I always get Ike the youngest one there. No doubt they have the best crab Louie in town. But I would like to see it reopen soon, just in memory of my dad who loved it there.

People ate too much there and you’d have to bring half of it home in a dogey bag but it was alway’s busy and you’d be waiting a long time for a seat and table.Good Luck to the new owner’s.

No No No! My aunts used to take me to lunch there once a month after I turned 21 for my first “proper” cocktail.
I will so miss the place, particularly the bar area and music- Hutch, Eddie, and the frequent “guest” horn players .. Oh I will miss getting up and trying to belt a tune but mostly the memories and ambiance of the place. Please bring back the band!

MS. JENNINGS! i worked at Joes for two years and have toiled in several other restaurants over the years. so i have walked at least a mile in waiter’s shoes and have the right to say it–the service at Joes of Westlake sucks!
