The South San Francisco City Council voted last night to approve a permit allowing the peer-to-peer car sharing company FlightCar to operate at a permanent site in South San Francisco. “FlightCar has a very unique business model,” said South San Francisco Mayor Karyl Matsumoto. “As a city we welcome new business opportunities and embrace innovative companies like FlightCar.”
FlightCar operates as a hybrid vehicle rental and parking service, providing travelling clients with free parking, a complimentary car wash and a ride to and from San Francisco International Airport in exchange for rights to rent out clients’ vehicles. FlightCar currently operates at a temporary location in South San Francisco.
As part of the permit agreement FlightCar will establish its West Coast hub of operations in South San Francisco, support South San Francisco businesses through promotions with its customers and pay an impact fee equal to 4% of gross revenues.
The application requires a second reading of the permit request, scheduled for the next City Council meeting on July 23, 2014, after which the FlightCar Development Agreement and Entitlements will be officially adopted by the City of South San Francisco. After final adoption by the City Council, FlightCar will transfer operations to a larger permanent site located at 323 South Canal Street in South San Francisco.
