SSFPD Media Release: Attempted Fraud by False Pretenses

On 07/30/14 at approximately 3:27pm, a South San Francisco resident received a telephone call from a male who identified himself as “Mike Johnson.”The suspect told the victim he was calling from Microsoft Windows and her computer system had been compromised by a hacker.The suspect told the victim he needed access to her computer to do a diagnosis. The victim did not provide the suspect with her computer password or any personal information. Microsoft Windows was contacted and advised they do not contact their customers over the phone nor did they have any records of any one calling the victim from the company. The number that showed on the victim’s caller identification was 231-324-1324 which has since been disconnected.

The South San Francisco Police Department encourages everyone to contact their service provider and verify the service call prior to giving out any personal information.
