On 07/29/2014, a South San Francisco resident received a phone call from an unknown male subject who stated he was a federal prosecutor from the State Generals Office. The male told the victim he had three pending charges and needed to wire several hundreds of dollars to him in order to be clear from all charges. The victim felt he was really in trouble, so he obtained the money, placed it on a Gree nDot Money Pak, and sent the money to the unknown suspect. The victim later received a phone from the subject and demanded more money from him, but the victim declined and contacted police.
Green Dot Money Pak is a pre-paid card that is purchased by consumers in any amount. You can purchase these cards at any convenient store such as CVS, Walgreens, etc. Once the card is purchased and activated, anyone with the authorization number can access the funds. On the back of the card has a warning that reads, “if anyone asks you for your Money Pak number or information from you receipt, it’s a scam.”
