UPDATE: THE CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO WILL ALLOW FREE PARKING ON GRAND AVE & THE DOWNTOWN AREA THIS SATURDAY NOVEMBER 29TH IN SUPPORT OF SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY ** COME EXPLORE OUR DOWNTOWN**
The Holiday Season is upon us once again and many have mixed feelings about it. The festivities of the season are welcomed by many while others see it as something ‘to get through’. Some enjoy the sport of shopping while others dread it as a war zone. Shopping at our local small businesses can help with both lines of thought- shopping can be plentiful with great deals and it can also be enjoyable at our local businesses.
The day after Thanksgiving has been dubbed Black Friday which kicks off the busiest shopping spree of the year in the US. For those who didn’t get their fix or couldn’t get out or prefer online shopping, the Monday following is now called Cyber Monday. American Express choose the Saturday nestled in between as Small Business Saturday and encourage communities to shop local and support our smaller establishments.
At Everything South City we support our local small businesses 356 a year and realize that the Thanksgiving weekend is the time most of us drop our cash…. and we want to encourage our neighbors to think about some of our Mom & Pop shops that are there for us 365 days a year. These are the businesses that support our kids school programs. They kick it down when we need fundraising prizes. They sponsor our youth sports teams. They hire our kids! Did you know when we buy from local businesses $68 out of $100 STAYS IN OUR LOCAL ECONOMY?
Our small businesses are the first in line to take a hit such as we all experienced a few years ago during the recession – and many of us are still feeling those effects. The 3/50 PROJECT takes this a bit further and really makes us think:
- What three independently owned business would you miss if they disappeared? Stop in. Say hello. Pick up something that brings a smile. Your purchases are what keeps those businesses around!
- If half the employed population spent $50 each month in locally owned independent businesses it would generate more than $42.6 Billion in revenue. Imagine if 3/4 of our local population did that!
- For every $100 spent in locally owned stores $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll taxes, and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain only $34 stays local. Spend in online and NOTHING COMES HOME.
Support our Small Business Saturday November 29th.
Everything South City has partnered with American Express/ Small Business Saturday and has been working with several of our local small businesses that enjoy a well earned excellent reputation. Stop by any of these establishments on Saturday November 29th and receive a FREE canvas re-usable bag (as supplies last). And remember GIFT CARDS or Certificates are welcomed by everyone on your list! Come on down to Old Town and explore new places and reacquaint with favorites. Meet up with friends for a bite to eat in one of our many eateries and create new holiday traditions supporting local businesses, and neighbors!

MORE ON -Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after U.S. Thanksgiving during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. First observed on November 27, 2010, it is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local. Small Business Saturday is a registered trademark of American Express corporation. In 2010 the holiday was conceived and promoted by American Express via a nationwide radio and television advertising campaign. That year Amex bought advertising inventory on Facebook, which it in turn gave to its small merchant account holders,[1] and also gave rebates to new customers to promote the event.[2][3]American Express publicized the initiative using social media, advertising, and public relations. At least 41 [2] local politicians and many small business groups in the United States issued proclamations concerning the campaign,[4][5][6] which generated more than one million Facebook “like” registrations and nearly 30,000 tweets under the Twitter hashtags #smallbusinesssaturday (which had existed since early 2010) and #smallbizsaturday.[7]The Twitter hashtag #SmallBusinessSaturday has existed since early 2010 and was used to promote small businesses on any Saturday (not solely that Saturday between Black Friday and Cyber Monday). The hashtag is used in a manner similar to #FollowFriday to highlight favorite local businesses. Additionally, some small business owners have run marketing specials on the November Small Business Saturday to help capitalize on the boost in foot or online traffic, as most customers in this time period are actively shopping for the holidays.
