REDWOOD CITY, CA – February 2, 2015 – South San Francisco Unified School District teacher, Cindy Shusterman, has been selected as the recipient of the Dorothy Boyajian Honored Teacher Award for 2015. Ms. Shusterman was recognized at the 16th Annual San Mateo County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration on January 19, 2015 at the Downtown San Mateo CalTrain Station.
Ms. Shusterman has been a teacher for 11 years, and for 9 of those years, she has been at South San Francisco High School teaching English and AVID. She also serves as an advisor for the Gay- Straight Alliance and for Sojourn to the Past, an academic immersion program that provides students with an opportunity to travel along the path of the Civil Rights Movement through five states in the American South.

King’s legacy, to fostering mutual respect in her classroom, and to building a welcoming community is admirable. Ms. Shusterman says she feels grateful her work was acknowledged. “I am very humbled to have received the award, and it has inspired me to continue doing the work I am already doing.”
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration began with an arts pre-program and the celebration followed shortly afterwards. Rev. Mary Frazier and the San Mateo Union High School District’s Black Parents Association were also recognized at the event.
