South San Francisco, CA February 21, 2015 **update below**
On Tuesday February 17th 49 year old Guillermo Rubalcaba-Sandoval and his son Luis Rubalcaba along with Luis’ 22 year old finance’ Larissa Castaneda set off on their 12 foot canoe from Oyster Point in South San Francisco to do some fishing before night fall. Conditions changed and the canoe took on water causing the trio to enter the water while wearing life jackets. After being reported missing around 10:30 rescue crews, including South San Francisco Fire Department Fire Marine unit, were on scene searching an 8 mile radius in the bay, from Oyster Point to Coyote Point. The body of the Luis Rubalcaba was recovered and pronounced dead. Guillermo Rubalcaba-Sandoval was rescued unconscious and was rushed to Mills-Peninsula Hospital where he was pronounced dead a few hours later. Larissa Castaneda was found responsive and calling for help and was brought to shore by the US Coast Guard.

Luis was an explorer with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue post from 2011 to 2013. He graduated from the 73rd Law Enforcement Explorer Academy and had the honor of being the class president. Luis would have graduated from San Francisco State University in May with a degree in Criminal Justice.
Luis will be buried in his Explorer Uniform, therefore if you are an active explorer and have permission from your adviser to wear your uniform, please do so.
Luis was an instrumental member of the Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue post and will be greatly missed.

Viewing at Garden Chapel Mortuary on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm with a rosary at 7:00pm. The address is 855 El Camino Real, South San Francisco, Ca 94080.
Mass at Holy Angel’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 10:00 am with interment at Holy Cross Cemetery after the mass. The address of the church is 107 San Pedro, Colma Ca 94014 and Holy Cross is 1500 Mission Road, Colma, Ca 94014.
