On Friday March 14, 2015 an 11-year-old San Francisco girl and her 6-year-old brother were visiting South San Francisco and playing on the 300 block of Commercial Avenue. The children were crossing the street mid-block and did not see the oncoming car traveling eastbound on Commercial Avenue. 26-year-old South San Francisco resident Alberto Marquez Gomez, the driver of the vehicle, braked and swerved, but was unable to avoid hitting the girl. The 11-year-old was transported to San Francisco General Hospital where she was admitted and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Officers investigating the collision recognized the driver was displaying signs of driving under the influence and conducted a DUI investigation at the scene. The driver, Alberto Marquez Gomez, was arrested at the scene for felony DUI (causing injury) after failing field sobriety tests. The driver was booked into the San Mateo County Main jail where he is being held on $100,000 bail.
