South San Francisco, CA April 9, 2015 Submitted by Daly City Police Department
Yesterday, twenty-three traffic officers from various law enforcement agencies throughout San Mateo County participated in the San Mateo County Saturation Traffic Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P.). This was the fourth deployment of a collaborative effort to increase traffic safety and awareness in known trouble spots throughout San Mateo County in 2015. The April 8th effort focused on traffic education and enforcement in the cities of Daly City and South San Francisco.
As part of April’s “Distracted Driving Awareness Month” campaign, officers focused on those who were texting and operating hand-held cell phones while driving. Officers made in excess of 260 traffic stops in the two cities and issued 233 citations. Of the 233 citations issued, 89 were for distracted driving violations, 38 were for pedestrian safety violations, 32 were for seat belt violations, and 31 were for stop sign violations. Additionally, there were 3 drivers found to be driving unlicensed, 3 drivers found to be driving on a suspended driver license, and one driver was arrested for possession of a controlled substance.
The participating officers remained committed to making a high volume of traffic stops in this coordinated saturation effort, while maintaining the highest levels of community awareness and professionalism. The number of stops and citations during this most recent deployment reflect a sustained enthusiasm for this program and traffic safety on the Peninsula.
The agencies who participated in yesterday’s detail were:
San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, Belmont P.D., Burlingame P.D., Colma P.D., Daly City P.D., East Palo Alto P.D., Foster City P.D., Hillsborough P.D., Menlo Park P.D., Pacifica P.D., Redwood City P.D., San Mateo P.D., and South San Francisco P.D.

Below are some comments from neighbors as they posted in real time yesterday on our Facebook page:
Marisa I saw a pedestrian decoy, woman with stroller, walking across El Camino (no crosswalk) right before the Orange intersection by Arby’s. The cars had to slow down abruptly, I’m sure thinking as I did, Really lady? Are you crazy? I could tell it was decoy, the person looked very padded down. Officers were giving out tickets like crazy today. Seriously making all drivers aware.
Melissa This is a ridiculous set up. Unsafe for the drivers, the decoy, and a waste of resources. It’s dishonest and a set up. I got a ticket this morning for avoiding that fake out. My fault maybe, but I was not distracted, speeding, or driving unsafely. A woman blatantly walking out into the street with a stroller and not checking for traffic first is outrageously careless
Debbie Yeah I got a ticket too,,,saying I didnt yield to this person that I didnt see,,,but there were 4 other poiice I thought there was an emergency vehicle coming after ,,,the officer (burlingame) said I didnt see it because I was looking at the police ,,,,yeah they created this,,,to give us tickets????…they were causing a distraction,,they are going to make an accident happen!!! If they want to give out tickets all they have to do is go to Costco on El camino,,or buri buri school they can give out a numerous of tickets where people can really be hurt!!!I feel this is not fair,,,or right!
Kelly I got a ticket from a Pacifica police officer on Mitchell and South airport..for no seat belt .I just pulled away from the sidewalk in motion of putting seat belt on .but they are out there testing the community..Full Effect. Drive safe.hopefully with all of this police presence the crime will go down in SSF
Jeannecy Seeing a lot of people getting pulled over on El Camino Real in south city I was waiting for the Samaritans it was kinda funny
Robert: These things should be illegal.
