Stop Speeding Before It Stops You
On Saturday November 14th, traffic officers fanned out across the City looking for speeding drivers. This was another one-day saturation patrol out of more than 15 more to be completed throughout the next ten months in South San Francisco. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Each saturation patrol consists of specially-trained officers using new state-of-the-art lidar devices to check driver ‘s speeds. Lidar is a highly-accurate laser device that measures distances down to inches and exact speeds of vehicles. The lidar devices are equipped with special sighting systems that can differentiate between different vehicles, allowing officers to target the fastest vehicle on a roadway and obtain an exact speed reading.
Officers targeted roadways in the City that have high injury or fatality traffic collision rates where speed was the primary cause of the accident. These streets included El Camino Real, Sister Cities Boulevard, and Hillside Boulevard. During the crackdown on Saturday, officers handed out 54 speeding citations. Two drivers with suspended licenses were cited and one unlicensed driver was cited.
Motorists are reminded to drive with caution, obey the speed limit, and drive safely. Remember to “Stop Speeding Before it Stops You”.
