South San Francisco, CA November 9, 2015
As we watch our region go through a major growth spurt here are only some of the additions and changes we will be seeing in our own City.
Downtown:
Sares Regis plans to build a 262-unit apartment in Downtown SSF, at the site of the former Ford dealership on Airport Blvd. The project will be reviewed by the Planning Commission in December.
211 Airport Blvd is set to start demo on the First National Bank with the construction of high density 5 story building which will house 69 units to include 1 – 2 bedrooms along with 106 parking spots.
Centennial Towers is in the process of being sold, per reports by SF Business Times reporter Ron Leuty, along with the plans for the 2nd tower that would house more biotech companies. Jack Meyers, original owner of this development, had also planned for the 2nd tower to house biotech yet recently had considered high end condos. Construction plans or dates have not yet been disclosed.
After 7 successful years at their Grand Ave location, Ben Tre moved up the street to 398 Grand on September 30th replacing Palm Village. The building at 217 Grand (Ben Tre’s former home) is slated to be demolished with new housing coming in.
415 Grand Ave, The Brick Building, has undergone a huge transition with new shop owners including Armstrong Brewery, Amis Creperie, The Copper Chimney, San Francisco Wine School, among others
303 Linden Ave is seeing new life as The COOP moved in this pastmonth. This 3600 square feet of indoor AND outdoor play area is perfect for the little ones and is open Monday thru Friday and also offers complete event planning!
223 Grand Avenue, original home of the Gavida Family’s Mexico Tipico, has plans under review for a Burger Shop.
Other new eateries include:
Still relatively new to the area is Amoura Mediterranean located in the old Leaning Tower Restaurant location at 713 Linden Avenue and Antigua Cafe at just celebrated their 1 year anniversary at 437 Grand Avenue (coffees, beers, wines, food).
East of Grand:
A 185-room AC Marriott hotel is starting construction along the waterfront at Veterans Blvd. “ACMarriott” is a stylish business hotel with over 60 locations in Europe — and SSF was selected as one of the first locations to receive this hotel in the U.S.
Construction is moving fast on the Britannia Cove project at Oyster Point Blvd! These buildings should be ready to occupy by September 2016… phase 1 of an 884,000 SF new biotech campus.
The Old Hungry Hunter at 180 S Airport Blvd has been demolished with new businesses coming in including Dunkin Donuts, Chiptolte, and a Burger Joint.
Fairfield Inn & Suites, a new 5 story Hotel at 127 W. Harris, will house 128 rooms and has been approved by the City.
Housing East of Grand The City Council is considering work force housing east of Grand near the area where the new Caltrain station will be set. More info CLICK HERE
Sunshine Gardens
35 new townhomes are being built on the vacant lot where Cuneo’s Farm was located, at 1256 Mission Road, just one block from BART. The developer is City Ventures. These will be very attractive units, particularly for first-time home buyers who commute on BART. More info on this development CLICK HERE
Buri Buri School
The construction of new classrooms at Buri Buri Elementary School has continued to cause major problems for neighbors as they (un)affectionately refer to huge mounds of dirt, some over 10 feet tall, as Mt Buri Buri. Neighbors who once had an open field across the street now look out at the back of classrooms and contend with the school’s new parking entrance with parents coming and going dropping off students and blocking driveways.
Centennial Village
The development on El Camino Real and Spruce is slated to be started in 2016, after many postponements. This will be home to 284 housing units and 222K sf of retail which will include a new Safeway, fitness club and Ross Dress-for Less among other tenants.
Across from the planned Centennial Village on El Camino Real and Rockwood (105 Rockwood) is another new building being constructed in the former Quality Kitchen location. This new business will be selling doors and windows. Construction is continuing.
Westborough
Westborough Hills Shopping Center, located at 3573 Callan, is undergoing a complete renovation which new shops set to open in a few months. Phase 1 includes the Seafood City specialty grocery store with a “lifestyle food court.” Phase 2 is a newly built 7,000 sq. ft. retail area on the north side of the center.
FOXRIDGE SCHOOL The SSFUSD is concerning workforce housing on one of the District owned surplus properties MORE INFO CLICK HERE
The above information has been gleaned via ESC archives, business websites, and SSF Economic & Community Development Department outreach.

What is being built off of Westborough Blvd around the California Golf Club?
Hi Evie,
The Golf Course is adding outbuildings aka barn, this is not housing or open to the public, and this has been in the planning stages for many years. Thanks – Kamala
Buildng Centennial Towers was not a stellar moment for SSF.
Jack Myers was going to make that corner of the mountain look beautiful, instead the city approved that condo tower that looks horribly out of place and centennial towers which although interesting seems out of place on the mountain. SOme of the new development across the street is not going to win any design awards either.
So many chances to make something amazing and so many safe choices.
This is nice summary of the developments coming to SSF.
I often say when are they going to bring in decent stores to the downtown? We need consmetic, toy, clothing boutiques, instead of delis and eateries. I’m still waiting.I see a few vacant spaces on Grand Ave.
Thanks this is really interesting and answers quite a few questions I had!
Thank you so much for this compilation.
As a resident(17+ yr) and a C.E.R.T. member of this town, I’ve been learning about how fine SSF is, and will be even better with developments like these.
SSF has $$$$!
