Middle of the Night Lines Form for South San Francisco Summer Camp Sign Ups

South San Francisco, CA   March 12, 2018

The South San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department held sign ups for summer camp programs on Saturday March 10th with early registration available for South City residents at 6:00 a.m. and open registration from 7:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. at the Municipal Services Building. Knowing spaces fill quickly the line started forming before 3:00 a.m. “Wow, so far about 80 people lined up inside for the summer camp tickets. I was at a little past the half way point. Lots of folding lounge chairs. Reminds me of Black Friday!” a resident told us. “There was a moment of oh shit when 4:30 a.m. hit and everyone started to shuffle to form a line- if people were going to follow the person that was in front or try and cut to a closer spot.”

The City had alerted those interested in the programs that the Traditional Camp at Orange Park was full yet they did have spaces available for the Traditional Camp at Ponderosa, Enrichment Camps, Sports Camp, TEEN Camp, and the Police and Fire Academy. The annual sign up event continues to ‘sell out’ of available camps leaving too many parents without the needed summer programs for their kids.

“After the briefing we all started to move in the line slowly around the room” our neighbor said “By the time I got to the sign up table most classes were full and you either do a week here or there or forget it. Over 50 other parents that came after me were pissed I bet. I left in a pissed off mood having waited for nothing.”

Another parent expressed appreciation that they were at least able to wait inside the MSB this year. “Past years we’ve had to wait outside in the cold so this year inside was warmer. But this is tough being up all night, especially when we officially loose another hour tomorrow with day light time change.”
