On Saturday, March 24th at approximately 12:35 A.M., South San Francisco Police Officers and South San Francisco Fire Department personnel responded to the intersection of Westborough Boulevard and Gellert Boulevard on the report of a traffic collision. Officers located a vehicle that had collided with an oncoming vehicle while traveling the wrong way on Westborough Boulevard. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the area. The driver was later located nearby with the assistance of a police canine. The investigation revealed the driver of the vehicle, identified as 43-year-old Laborer, Elmer Sandoval of San Mateo, was driving his vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Sandoval was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. A passenger in the other vehicle was transported to a local hospital with major injuries. Sandoval was later placed under arrest for driving under the influence. Sandoval was charged with driving under the influence causing bodily injury, fleeing the scene of a collision resulting in injuries, driving on the wrong side of a divided highway causing an injury and being an unlicensed driver. Sandoval was booked into the San Mateo County Jail.
