South San Francisco, CA May 18, 2018
We all love our Girl Scout Cookies and eagerly await February with the announcement of locations where we can find our favorite treats. But most of us do not fully appreciate what these cookie sales mean to our local Scouts and we appreciate Vanessa Sanchez sharing this amazing story.
Girl Scout Troop #62133 have multi-tasked and maximized their efforts this year to benefit South San Francisco readers when they completed their Sustainable Community Project by donating THREE Little Free Libraries to our City!
“These Little Free Libraries were purchased with their hard earned cookie sales money” Vanessa writes “To create and complete this project the girls spent 20+ hours doing lots of brainstorming, sanding, painting, designing, and used lots of that cookie sales money!”
The Little Free Library movement was started in 2009 in Wisconsin by two men, Todd Bol and Rick Brooks, as a way to encourage reading and to make books available at no cost to everyone. The concept is ‘Take a book, return a book’ at one of the thousands of Little Free Libraries scattered across the United States and in over 70 countries. This little libraries are popping up in front yards, next to schools, recreation facilities and beyond. The headquarters of this 501(c)(3) nonprofit remains in Wisconsin yet their commitment to Literacy, Community, and Creativity thrive wherever their stewards plant a new library, and in this instance, our Scouts planted them in Alta Loma Park, Buri Buri Elementary School front lawn, and Buri Buri Park.
Through this endeavor our Scouts have earned the Bronze Award and are so proud of their accomplishment. Our grateful community has the opportunity to thank these 5th-grade girls in person this Sunday May 20th at Buri Buri Park from 10:00-11:30AM during the Grand Opening.
“Please stop by if you can and show your support for the hard work done by our young girls.” Vanessa said “Light refreshments will be served, there will be music and an unveiling ceremony.” Mayor Liza Normandy and Mayor Pro Tem Karyl Matsumoto will be special guests at this event.
