South San Francisco, CA August 30, 2019
Fifty years ago, development plans called for the top of San Bruno Mountain to be leveled off, to fill in the Bay, allowing a whole City to be developed on top of it. Because of advocacy work, this beautiful mountain is now home to 3,600 acres of parkland. San Bruno Mountain Watch is proud of the legacy they have created in the good work they have done, and continue to do. {read more history HERE}

My parents didn’t have a lot of money when we were growing up. My Dad would pile the family in the car, and load up the backseat with warm blankets for when the fog rolled in, and made the drive up Radio road. The best was at sunset, with the sun going down below the oceanic horizon, and the blue- purple cloak of night slowly being pulled over the bay. We would point out places we could distinguish, our street or house, the airport watching planes take-off and land, the hustle and bustle of traffic. Others may tout about the vantage points at Twin Peaks, Mt. Diablo, or Mt. Hamilton. But standing atop San Bruno Mountain, starry sky above and the glow of city lights below, you feel as if you are ‘Rhodes’ Colossus’ and the ‘master of all you survey’. With one foot firmly on dry ground, and the other foot wiggling your toes in the Pacific surf.
My 3 year old granddaughter and I headed up the slope along the roadway in back of the Hillside Elementary school one afternoon. I brought the Camcorder to film her and I on the mountain. However, we started a bit late and although we did not get very far up, it began to get dark before we had succeeded in getting off the mountain. So using the camcorder light to guide our way, the two of us slid down the steep slippery slope to safety but the jeans I was wearing did not survive. You might say we were saved by the seat of my pants.
Seeing the gorgeous view of the mountain when I’d visit my Mom. ❤
My favorite memories of San Bruno Mountain are of my dad and I hiking up with cardboard in tow and sliding down those letters together. Over and over we climbed and slid. I remember always being so tired that he carried me back to the car. I must have been 5 when we started doing it.
