South San Francisco, CA   October 26, 2020

Join us in welcoming Garden Chapel Funeral Services to our amazing family of sponsoring advertisers! Personally, our family has utilized the services at Garden Chapel for decades and speak from experience in promoting our local Funeral Home.

Garden Chapel is independently owned by South City resident Al Banfield, who is also a long-time community leader who has a proven record of genuinely caring for others. A ‘Pillar of the Community’ is how the South San Francisco Chamber of Commerce acknowledged him during the 2016 Chamber Awards ceremony when Al was awarded the ‘Dick Noftsger Lifetime Achievement Award’.

Al has a long history of service which includes the SSF Host Lions Club, Elks Lodge No. 2091, Young Men’s Institute Council No. 32, and the SSFPAL Boosters, SSF Italian American Citizen’s Club, SSF ICF Branch 9, Disabled Vietnam Veterans, SSG (Retired) US Army, Purple Heart Society, Old Timer of San Francisco, in addition to his involvement with the Louis P. Guaraldi Food Basket Program and the Kevin and Lucille Cremer Scholarship Fund.

Al Banfield is also a retired US Army, Staff Sergent, having served in Vietnam, 6th Battalion, 31st Infantry and was awarded the Bronze Star, and has been a keynote speaker at many of our Memorial Day events. He is also a disabled Veteran. Further, he received the Veteran of the Year 2015 by the California State Assembly, among other much-deserved accolades through the years.

Al took on full independent ownership of the Garden Chapel upon the death of former co-owner Dick Noftsger in 2006 and has continued offering our community compassionate help during our most difficult times. Garden Chapel is now celebrating over 60 years of serving families, of all faiths and cultures, with dignity and reverence, and offers guidance from preneed planning to grief support, and more.

“Why Should I Plan Ahead?”

Planning ahead is one thing no one really wants to do, but as the old saying goes:

“There are only two sure things in this world that are certain, and that is Death and Taxes.”

Planning ahead is like a person buying a life insurance policy. A person does this because if something happens to a loved one they will have something to fall back on to get their lives back in order. Planning ahead is no different than the above-mentioned life insurance; it allows your family to not worry about the arrangements of a funeral. Most families that I have written pre-arrangements for have always stated that they feel so much better because my kids (or family) do not have to worry about my funeral or perhaps the family members live a long way away. This is so much a caring attitude for parents or any person to think this way.

“No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear.

The death of a beloved is an amputation.”

– C.S. Lewis wrote in A Grief Observed

Garden Chapel also offers grief support, that also includes grief that is unacknowledged,

or when grief doesn’t ease as time goes on.

Al Banfield is one of the most honest, caring and sincere people you will ever meet. I truly trust him…and that’s saying ALOT as I have major “trust issues”. You can absolutely count on him. He is a TRUE HERO!
