South San Francisco, CA September 25, 2021 By Garden Chapel Funeral Directors
Lando passed away peacefully in his sleep and surrounded by love at his home in South San Francisco on September 19, 2021. He was 92.
A lifelong South San Franciscan he was the only child born to Pietro and Giulia Baldocchi. Attended Magnolia Elementary School, South San Francisco High School Class of 1947 and alumnus of San Francisco State University.
During a family trip to Italy Lando met his future wife Giuseppina, or Pina as he called her and was immediately smitten. Within two months on July 7, 1962, they were married and by the end of that year Pina joined him in South San Francisco where the couple began to build a life together.
Lando was a dedicated employee of Zellerbach Paper Company for 45 years. In retirement he greatly enjoyed being a member of the South San Francisco Library Board and the Friends of the Library and supporting all-things-library. He was Life Member of the Historical Society of South San Francisco. He was an opera lover and a voracious reader who was especially fond of history and good literature. He was a regular volunteer in the Grand Library History Room, as well as in the Main Library and shared his experiences growing up in SSF. Learning and literacy were core values of Lando; he attended many annual Project Read Trivia Challenges and continued to support this event after he could no longer attend.
Lando will be remembered as a man who overcame life’s challenges with dignity. He was intelligent, thoughtful, compassionate and a man of few words with tremendous insight who loved his sweets.
Lando was the faithful husband of 59 years to Giuseppina Baldocchi who preceded him in death only five days before his passing. Devoted father to Julie and father-in-law to David Schurba. He will be missed by his sister-in-law Iole, his nephew Massimo and niece Claudia and their families, his dog Miso and an extended circle of family and friends in the U.S. and Italy
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Mary Kurulo and Ane Cook for their many years of dedication and tender loving care. Also, a huge thank you to the Kaiser Palliative Care Team and the staff at Pathways Hospice for their excellent care.
Private services to be held.
Donations in memory of Lando Baldocchi can be made to the South San Francisco Public Library Foundation, 840 West Orange Avenue, South San Francisco, CA 94080 or www.ssfgives.org/donate to support the building of a new public library a project he had advocated for over many years.
