South San Francisco, CA October 1, 2021 via ESC FB
You are given the opportunity to bring one thing back to South San Francisco, no worry on cost or details, what would it be? What do you miss most from yesteryear in South City?
Nearly 500 responses were given to this question when we shared it as a #TBT (throw back Thursday) post last month. If you have yet to answer, do so now! And enjoy the memories shared by our South City neighbors below….. if only!

Well a lot have said it!! I would give my pinky for the recipe for the real Papa Joe’s Pizza!! I would buy a real pizza oven, just to do it right!!! There are a lot of things in South City that are gone and will never come back. I have lived her for 69 years .Another great one was Joe’s Blue Room, THATS what it was called before it was called Bertolucci’s, that’s when the old man Joe Bertolucci did all the cooking, and had a room and board hotel upstairs on grand Avenue. You’re rented a room. You’ve got a free meal with your room every night at dinner time. My dad was Joe’s bartender!!!
The bike shop on Grand Ave next to Sanitary Bakery….
I miss the real Industry on East Grand. Worked at Fuller O’Brien for several years. Also Bethlehem Steel. Back in the days when generations worked at the same company and it was all American made. I also miss North Beach Italian Deli (oh the pesto & best bread!). And even further back, I miss Jumping Bean…way before Taco Bell or even McDonalds.
1) Move the Chestnut Safeway to the Center across the street from the new police station
where the Cala Foods used to be, add more business there.
2) Day in the Park
3) Put the bridge back to cross Hillside Blvd. to Hillside Elementary
4) We need a place for food trucks to come to SSF
Bring back the Sanitary Bakery and Day in the Park. Sad no one even mentioned it when they left. Mr. Galli used to make the best raised donuts ever! The focaccia bread yummy. Mrs. Galli used to sell me frosting for my cake! who does that anymore?Brisbane is what SSF used to be, quiet, slow, nice, friendly but they don’t have a Safeway.
The latest is they want to put 7 science buildings near San Bruno BART. It is horrible that the city residents have no local control anymore. Put anymore building on the ballot.and no bioscience West of 101. Speak up, show up, zoom up! Take back your town!
Definitely Galli’s sanitary bakery, The Dutch crunch loaf was to die for! The leaning tower restaurant, Bertolucci‘s restaurant! ???
I agree with everyone. I would be nice to have all these places back again. As for me. I’d like to have the Spruce Drive in come back with a full snack bar.
I would like the 40s and early 50s, when almost everyone had vegetable gardens in their back yards and kept the front of their homes clean, with bushes, flowers and lawns. Also neighbors were always lookin out or helping each other.
South City Car Wash
On the current construction site at Chestnut/ECR home of the new Parks & Recreation Comm Ctr was the former Mini Golf land and Play Center. Back side to the former El Rancho Elementary school the former El Rancho Drive Inn that developed into a private housing community. On Railroad & Spruce was the former Spruce Drive Inn. Not too distant we experienced Serra Bowl and on ECR was the former Brentwood Bowl. On East Grand Avenue was the former Roller Rink. Places where landmarks reflects great pastime. Kids today should have such places available including, fun activity Centers to go to and places to enjoy for a lifetime of their memories..Look around our City and imagine how it was then, and how it is now, and moving into the future. High rises and City structures and yet, more to come..
Imagine.. how it was then, how it is now. my, my, those were the days….
Stop all this building, and bring all buildings back to 2-stories. And have a City Council and government that represents the residents, not the biotech and big businesses. We have lost our way.
Bogy’s at linden ave.
Hey David Doyle Gipson! Did you work for Vince and Tony Selvagio back in 79 when Dana and Berta were waitressing and Rich (Son in law) was spinning pizza’s in the hot oven kitchen area? I delivered pizzas back then with John Schevone and I recall David? who lived on Miller Ave. and drove a clean 71 yellow Ford Ranchero…? Rich was Vince’s son in law the youngest daughter was Marcella?
Jlandos
Elimimate the mono-species “LAWN” and restore the coastal sagebrush / chapparal. What is magical about the coastal sagebrush (400+ species) is the aromatic fragrance they produce, and the animals they atttact. https://blog.nwf.org/2019/06/cities-need-urban-wildlife-plans-to-combat-the-extinction-crisis/
Competent city government that puts the needs of the residents above the needs of the biotech industry. Add to that their need to have a sense of the history of this town and a need to protect it. What we have ended up with is a government that seeks to sell this city’s soul parcel by parcel to the highest bidder. I’ve been here long enough to know “first hand” that it wasn’t always this way.
