James Joseph McTiernan, holding hands with his wife Mira, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2022, in his hometown San Francisco. James, a fourth generation San Franciscan, is survived by his wife Mira McTiernan, (nee Mahoney). James and Mira were married for 73 years. He was born to William and Mary McTiernan on March 11, 1923.

James is survived by his sons Daniel (Kerry), James (Mary), Thomas (d. 1983) Patrick (Carmen) and daughter Mary. James leaves behind 12 grandchildren, James, Colleen, Aileen, Emily, Andrew, Amanda, Allison, Erin, Fiona, Briana, Christopher and Nicholas. He also leaves behind 13 great grandchildren.

James served in the United States Navy during World War II as Motor Machinist Mate First Class (T) USNR V-6. James and Mira met on a train from San Francisco to Boyes Hot Springs and were married in 1949. His Pacific Telephone career spanned over 37 years, a proud member of CWA Union and Pacific Telephone Pioneers.

A South San Francisco resident since 1955, and a dedicated Saint Veronica’s parishioner for over 64 years, he was a Eucharistic Minister and active SVdP volunteer. He was active in his community as a SSF Pee Wee PAL “Private Eyes” Coach, Cub Scout Leader and various organizations. James was a world traveler, avid painter, gardener and golfer.

Rosary will be on Sunday, August 14, 2022, 3:00pm Garden Chapel, South San Francisco. Funeral Mass Monday, August 15, 2022, 10:30am at Saint Veronica’s Catholic Church, SSF. A private burial at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery will take place at a later date.
