Canepa on state budget: Uncertainty looms with projected $22.5 billion deficit
DALY CITY – San Mateo County Supervisor David J. Canepa made the following statement today after California Gov. Gavin Newsom unveiled a $297 billion spending plan that projects a $22.5 billion deficit.
“While the budget released today will likely change dramatically in the coming months leading up to the May revisions, one thing is clear, there will be belt-tightening ahead that will impact every county in the state,” Canepa said. “We are seeing a loss of one-time funding that will clearly impact the wallets of millions of Californians. While I appreciate the governor’s optimism, I believe in these uncertain times that the state should consider dipping into its approximate $37 billion in reserves if necessary to stabilize our still recovering economy.”
