South San Francisco, CA November 25, 2023 by John Horgan, Reporter
It was unthinkable just a couple of short years ago. But the South San Francisco High School football program, which did not field a varsity at one point in this decade as a long losing streak and other negative factors took their toll, is on the cusp of history on Saturday night in San Jose.
The Warriors, sporting an 11-1 record, will face Santa Teresa of San Jose at 7 p.m. at MacDonald High School, not far from Great America. If South City wins the Central Coast Section Division V championship, it will proceed to a Northern California regional bowl game with a state bowl game crown looming.
A 12th victory would also herald the most wins in the school’s history, according to available records. The Warriors’ outstanding 1989 team was 11-0 and won a CCS championship in the process. This year’s South City aggregation has a single loss, to Capuchino of San Bruno early in the season. The Warriors won the Peninsula Athletic League’s Lake Division with a 5-0 mark.
South City beat Santa Teresa 13-7 in freezing cold San Jose. It was colder than SSF. It was a good game and Santa Teresa was ready for us. We packed our side of the new beautiful McDonald hs stadium and went crazy as we had witnessed big time history. We now host Colusa this coming Saturday at 6pm.
