SSFPD Media Release: More Arrests Made in Gang Assault

On August 15 2015, the South San Francisco Police Department responded to the 700 block of Linden Avenue on a report of a gang assault. A twenty-four year old South San Francisco resident was attacked and beaten by five suspects. The investigation that day led to the apprehension and arrest of three of the five suspects. Two suspects arrested that day were juveniles and the other suspect was Jose Luis Hernandez, a 19 year-old from South San Francisco. The three were arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy and for participating in a criminal street gang. The two remaining suspects were not apprehended at the time.

Subsequent to being booked at the San Mateo County Jail, suspect Jose Luis Hernandez was released upon posting bond . In the following days, the ongoing police investigation revealed that the victim was also robbed of his personal property at the time of the assault, so the offense of robbery was added to the l ist of charges the suspects were facing.

On Tuesday, August 25, 2015, Detectives from the South San Francisco Police Department , assisted by officers from other law enforcement agencies, spread out across the City and served search warrants and arrest warrants in connection with the gang assault. Officers served search warrants at three homes and arrested three suspects connected to this case.

Arrested were:

(S) Robert Edward Fabris III, a 23 year old tow truck driver from South San Francisco

(S) Alejandro Santos Benavides, an 18 year-old from South San Francisco.

Both suspects were arrested for: 245(a)( l) PC (assault with a deadly weapon), 182(a)(l) PC (conspiracy), 186.22(b) PC (participate in criminal street gang), and 211 PC (robbery).

Officers also re-arrested

(S) Jose Luis Hernandez and charged him with the additional offense of robbery (for which he was not arrested the first time).

Chief Jeff Azzopardi said the City has zero tolerance for gang violence and is encouraged by the community’s involvement in helping keep South San Francisco a safe place to live. “Thanks to the cooperation and assistance from members of the community, all five suspects in this case were quickly identified and apprehended. It is this kind of cooperative policing that is helping to make our City a safer place.”
