South San Francisco, CA November 3, 2015
On Sunday, August 30, 2015, at approximately 9:30 a.m., the South San Francisco Police Department received a call from a resident who reported seeing a man with a rifle near the intersection of Del Monte and Romney Avenues. When police arrived they found 55 year old South City resident Mike Gordon sitting on the corner with a shotgun. Police instructed Gordon to remain sitting however he got up and walked towards police with his shotgun allegedly pointed at Sgt Ken Hancock who fired a single shot into Gordon’s side wounding him. Gordon was taken to the local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Gordon went before Judge Leland Davis yesterday and was charged with threatening an officer and brandishing a firearm at an officer. He pleaded no contest in exchange for a referral to mental health services as reports state Gordon had previously attempted suicide and he may have been attempting to initiate ‘suicide by cop‘. His plea also requested placement in a mental health facility, and no prison time. Gordon will enter a mental health program on November 13th.
